The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library has a number of historic photos on its website. To get a glimpse of what life was like for the Plenzler, Przybylski, and Mierzejewski ancestors, visit the site. It is located here:

. Particularly interesting are the collection of photos for the industries for which Toledo was famous: Willy-Overland (now Chrysler Jeep), Champion Spark Plug, Auto Lite, and others as well as some photos of the strikes that occurred as well as photos of neighborhoods and churches. As a teaser, I’ve linked to a photo of the interior of St. Anthony’s church, about 1900, of a service in progress.

I never knew that St Anthony’s was so beautiful. That was where at least two of my uncles were born/baptised (in 1910′s).
Why can’t we have churches that beautiful anymore?

Donna–
I read your post and decided to troll the website you referenced. I found another picture of Saint Anthony’s here: http://images2.toledolibrary.org/getdcimage.asp?image=/images/kdrive/archive/series74/38c8bdcb.jpg&key=anthony's &how=and&start=0&offset=10. That website is a great collection of photos. Thanks for sharing!

Hi, just wanted to let you know that the Toledo library has the interior photo of St. Anthony’s labeled incorrectly. It is actually an early photo of St. Joseph’s in Maumee. St. Anthony’s has 4 windows in the apse….not 2, plus it has gothic architecture, not a modified Romanesque style which is shown in that picture.

I’ll have to get in touch with the TPL and check it out. St. Joe’s is older than St. Anthony’s, so it’s possible the photo was misidentified. Thanks!

I will concur with Kyle. That photo is most assuredly not the interior of St. Anthony. I was the parish organist for 10 years. 1970-1980.

Thank you Matthew. I’ll have to follow up with the Toledo Public Library. I had only been in St. Anthony once or twice as a child, many years ago.
