Sieja

So…today, I make up for lost time with an additional post. I apologize, but I just haven’t had the time to keep up with the genealogy work this year. I don’t foresee the next year providing me with much time, either. But I intend to make the most of the time I do have available!

While visiting Calvary Cemetery this past July, I did some row mowing with the camera. I had found a Jankowski grave that I cannot identify. I am related to some Jankowskis through my mother–two daughters of Martin Plenzler, Edna and Florence,  had married Stanley Jankowski. Florence had married Stanley first, they had three daughters. Then after Florence had passed away and Edna was widowed (Edna’s first husband was Danny Sieja), Edna and Stanley had married. So when I encountered this stone in Calvary, I was intrigued. However, no matter how hard I tried, I could not identify the persons buried there. It seems the stone sunk enough to cover the names of those it is memorializing.

The grave is located in Section 25. If you can identify these persons, please feel free to contact me here.

I’ve returned. Didn’t think I’d be gone too long? Summer was busy, hopefully fall won’t be so busy (meaning, I won’t be goofing off as much!).

Been meaning to follow up with more Rochowiak data I’ve been collecting. Worked to trace the Martin Rochowiak family, my great-grandmother’s half-brother. As noted previously, I do have the marriage record for Martin and his wife, Catherine. However, the data I have been able to locate has been incomplete so far. Here’s what I’ve found so for that I can at least verify.

Martin and Katherine were married 3 November 1877 in Góra Żnin, Poland. I cannot locate any ship manifests that could be considered at least close to either Martin or Katherine.  The 1910 and 1930 census records provides an immigration year of 1885; the 1920 census provides an immigration year of 1889. Per the 1920 census, Martin was naturalized in 1897. So that is an area for some research in the future–to review immigration records in the Toledo Lucas County Library to locate the naturalization records.

Martin and Katherine had seven children:

  1. Frances, b. 1880, d. 1961, m. Felix Tafelski. Frances likely was born in Poland.
  2. Agnes, b. 1882, d. 1928, m. Anthony Dutkeiwicz. Agnes was likely born in Poland.
  3. Teresa, b. 1883, d. unknown, m. George Suchala. Teresa was likely born in Poland..
  4. Joseph, b. 1880, d. unknown, m. Justina ?? — Joseph did not seem to marry until after the death of his parents. The 1930 census places Joseph living with his parents and the 1940 census shows him living at the same address with a wife named Justina. The address on the 1930 census indicates 406 Detroit; however, his father’s death certificate reflects an address of 408 (which is the same address as the 1940 census).
  5. Jadwiga, b. possibly December 1891, d. p0ssibly December 1953, m. possibly twice: once to a Buckowski and secondly to Frank K. Sieja. Her parents’ death notices list her as Hattie Buckowski. Her death certificate notes her husband as Frank K. Sieja and her name as Pauline and as Jadwiga.
  6. Rose, b 1893, d. 1931, m. Anthony Luczak.
  7. Martha, b. 1899, d. 1982, m. Benedict Idzikowski.

Martin died 12 February 1931. His death notice was published in the Toledo News Bee on 13 February 1931 and is transcribed below:

ROCHOWIAK, MARTIN–Age 80 years, beloved husband of Catherine, Thursday at 7 p.m. Father of Joseph, Mrs. Frances Tuselski, Mrs. Theresa Suchala, Mrs. Rose Luczak, Mrs. Hattie Buckowski, Mrs. Martha Idzikowski, 25 grand-children and six great-grandchildren. Funeral Monday, Feb. 16 at 7:45 a.m. from the residence, 408 Detroit Ave., and 8 a.m. at St. Stanislaus church. Interment family lot Calvary cemetery. W.K. Sujkowski

Katherine died just a few weeks later on 5 March. Her death notice was published on 6 March in the Toledo News Bee and is transcribed below:

ROCHOWIAK, KATHERINE–Aged 73, ???, widow of the late Martin Rochowiak, beloved mother of Joseph, Mrs. Frances Tafelski, Mrs. Theresa Suchala, Mrs. Rose Luczak, Mrs. Hattie Buckowski, Mrs. Martha Idzikowski, 26 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren; Thursday at 10 a.m. Funeral Monday March 9, 8:45 a.m. from the residence, 408 Detroit Ave., 9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus church. Interment Calvary Cemetery, family lot. Friends invited.

Two obituaries today. One I was actually seeking, the other happened to be, quite coincidentally, published the same day and of some interest to my family tree. I often go back through the archived newspapers on Google to backfill my data with obituaries. So I purposefully went to seek Victoria Przybylski Sieja’s obit, I hadn’t located it before. However, published on the same day as hers — October 21, 1937 — was the obituary of my aunt’s (Celia Mierzejewski Starzynski) husband’s brother, John Starzynski.

Both obits are below and are transcribed.

Since today’s theme over at Geneabloggers is Tombstone Tuesday, I thought I’d post a few more of the grave photos I have from Calvary.

Rozalia Rochowiak, d. 15 July 1895

Rozalia Rochowiak, d. 15 July 1895

I stumbled upon this grave. I have not tied it to my family tree (who knows?) but it gives me hope that I’ll someday trace the Rochowiak line. It is located here:Grave: 4, Lot: 182, Section: 30. All I am able to transcribe off the stone is the name and the date of death which was 15 July 1895, date and location both verified through the Calvary Cemetery burial records.

This is another Rochowiak grave I stumbled upon.

Marta Marya Rochowiak

Marta Marya Rochowiak

Marta, baptized Martha, was the daughter of Frank and Kat Oskonski Rochowiak. I have not placed these persons in my tree (yet at least). Martha’s death certificate is also located here. The grave location is: Grave: 68, Lot: 2, Section: 32. The dates on the gravestone are birth 1915, death 1923.

Andrew and Mary Sieja

Andrew and Mary Sieja

Andrew and Mary Zielinski Sieja. Andrew was the son of Frank and Victoria Przybylski Sieja. Mary was the daughter of John and Mary Mruk Zielinski. Also see here for John and Mary’s grave photo. Andrew and Mary’s grave is located here: Grave: W 1/2, Range or Lot: 419, Section: 37.

Today’s theme over at GeneaBloggers is Wednesday’s child.

Ronald Jankowski was the son of Florence Plenzler and Stanley Jankowski. Florence was the daughter of Martin Plenzler and Minnie Machowiak. Interestingly, Stanley was widowed when Florence passed away in 1946. He then married her sister, Edna, in 1950 Edna was widowed a few years prior when her husband, Daniel Sieja passed away.

Ronald was born December 14, 1933 and died February 13, 1934 of pneumonia.

Stumbled upon a contact within ancestry.com who is a granddaughter of Martha. She graciously shared a few photos of Martha Sieja and her husband, Casper Roman. Martha was a daughter of Victoria Przybylski and Frank Sieja. She was my first cousin, once removed.  Martha and Casper were married in 1933 in St. Anthony’s parish.

Here are the photos:

Martha Sieja and Casper Roman, 1932

They seem to look as if they were a pair of tend setters. In 1932, Martha was 18 years old. To my eye, it appears as if she were quite fashionable. Casper cuts quite an attractive figure in that well-tailored double-breasted suit as well.

Martha passed away in 1961. Her obituary was published in the Toledo Blade on December 31, 1961 and is transcribed below:

Mrs. Martha D. Roman, 48, of 2432 Rosewood Ave., died yesterday in Mercy Hospital.

A lifelong Toledo resident, she was a member of the 14th Ward Oldtimers Auxiliary.

The body is in the Sujkowski Mortuary. Services will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Ann’s Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Casper passed away in 1968. His obituary was published in the Toledo Blade on June 16, 1968 and is transcribed below:

ROMAN–CASPER V., age 65, of 2031 Evansdale. Widower of the late Martha; dearest father of Mrs. Bernadine Kajfasz, Mrs. Patricia Augustyniak, Mrs. Rosemary Leady, Mrs. Marcia Garcia, Mrs. Diane Schmidt, Mrs. Kathleen Relily; brother of Mrs. Bernice Jaskowiak, Mrs. Alice King, Mrs. Stella Mitchell, Dorothy Borkowski, Henry and Daniel Roman, all of Toledo; also survived by 20 grandchildren. As always, if you know anything about Martha or Casper, please leave a comment here and I’ll follow up.

When I began to first research my great-grandparents, Andrew Przybylski and Frances Rochowiak, things just didn’t seem to stack up right. There are a number of Przybylskis in the Toledo area, and it seemed several of them married into the Plenzler family. However, I could not put my finger on all of the children Andrew and Frances had. Originally, I had located these offspring. Then while searching through baptismal records, I had located Marianna Przybylski. Correspondence between myself and John Plenzler indicated that Andrew and Frances had two other sons: John and Joseph.

However, John and Joseph remained rather elusive. Joseph though was hiding right beneath  my nose and I didn’t realize it until reading my grandfather’s (John Plenzler) baptismal record. Sometimes a little insomnia is all it takes–not being able to sleep, I was reviewing data on my mother’s family. And voila. There Joseph appeared, bright as daylight. He was baptized the same day, by the same priest as my grandfather John Plenzler was baptized.

Joseph was born February 18, 1885 and baptized February 22. See record #20 here.  The record is transcribed below:

Record #20
Nomen Infantis: Joseph
Parentes: Andreas Przybyla, Francisca Rochowiak
Patrini: Majher Nowicki, Michaelina Osinska
Nati: 18 Februarii
Bapt: 22 Februarii
Nomran Sacrdotis: Rev. M. F. Orzechowski

Note that the family’s last name here is listed as Przybyla, not Przybylski.

Joseph married a woman named Rose and they resided at 507 Pulaski Street per the 1920 census. The 1930 census places the Joseph Przybylski family at 1625 Belmont Avenue.

Per the 1930 census, Joseph and Rose had four children:

  • Virginia
  • Richard
  • Alvine (Alvina?)
  • Dorothy

Joseph passed away on July 8, 1937.  He was 51 per his Ohio Death certificate. His obituary was published in the Toledo News-Bee on July 9 and is transcribed below:

Joseph Przybylski

Joseph Przybylski died Thursday in his home at 1517 Pinewood Ave.

He leaves his wife, Rose; three daughters, Mrs. Virginia Napierala and Misses Eleanor and Dorothy, a son, Richard; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Erdman, Mrs. Dorothy Sieja, Mrs. Netti Plenzler, and Mrs. Eva Hejnicki; a brother, Frank, all of Toledo, and another brother, John, Detroit.

Services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday in the residence at and 9 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in Calvary.

This obituary proves the existence of another sibling named John. The existence of yet another sibling, named Dorothy will need to be investigated. His daughter, Dorothy, could not have been married at his death. She was only two years old at the time of the 1930 census. However, Joseph did have a sibling named Victoria who had married Frank Sieja. So it is possible the name is simply misprinted in the obituary.

Joseph was buried from St. Stanislaus parish in Calvary Cemetery on July 12, 1937. The church death record is transcribed below:

Record of Interments
Date of Death and Burial: D. July 8th, B. July 12th
Name of Person Interred: Przybylski, Joseph
Place of Birth: Poland
Age: 51y
Disease: Heart
Priest: John A. Labuzenski (sp?)
Cemetery: Calvary

Note that the place of birth is incorrect as there is a record of his birth in Toledo, Ohio through St. Anthony’s Parish that reflects both his date of birth and date of baptism.

Joseph’s burial record from Calvary Cemetery is transcribed below:

No.: 38869
Name: Joseph Przybylski
Residence: 1517 Palmwood
Age: 51
Cause of Death: Unknown
Date of Interment: July 13
Grave: 100
Range or Lot: 10
Section: 40
Undertaker: F. Czglosz
Remarks:

Research to continue to locate John and verify the possibility of yet another Przybylski sibling named Dorothy.
