Szymanowski

Sorry folks, I’ve been away. The extended absence over the Christmas holidays and the busy-ness that ensued afterwards to keep up with work and other obligations (stuff piles up when you ignore it) kept me away.

But I want to point out something quite interesting that was contributed to this blog by the Rev. Thomas Extejt. He kindly identified a photo of Frank Plenzler and Sophia Szymanowski. His post states:

Dear Donna:
The wedding picture in your November ’11 blog is definitely my great-aunt, Sophia Szymanowski Plenzler, and her new husband, Frank Plenzler. I confirmed this with an older cousin who lives in Florida. Uncle Frank was a genius at carpentry, and incredibly strong for a little wiry man. Aunt Sophie loved everybody. I spent many happy hours at their house at 1240 Campbell St.

I wanted to put his response on the landing page of this blog since it was originally placed on the “About me” page–where it might be a bit obscure to others who I know visit here.

My New Year resolution is of course, to return and post as much as possible! Winter is here and I’m content to stay inside were it is warm and dry and untangle mysteries.

Today’s theme over at GeneaBloggers is Wedding Wednesday. Today’s photo is provided by John Plenzler, who graciously sent me a number of photos quite a while ago. It is a mystery photo. Per information that was provided with the photo:

Unknown wedding, may be descendants of Joseph and Eva Dauer. May be Sophie Plenzler and Steve Szymanowski, not sure need verification.  Bride resembles Barbara Szymanowski.  May also be Frank Plenzler and Sophie Szymanowski, Sophie was Steve’s sister. Click the photo to see a larger high-res scan.

Unknown wedding photo

I have no other clues. If any one can help identify these two, leave a comment here or drop me an email.

I love looking at old wedding photos. This bride has such a sweet face. Doesn’t the groom look ahem a bit as if he is wondering what he’d just gotten into? If you zoom in on the wedding dress, check out the detail. It appears as if there is an apron embroidered with hundreds of delicate stones–beautiful! If you zoom in on the bride’s stockings, they’re lovely and embroidered also.

When I discovered Sophia Plenzler, a daughter of Joseph and Eva Dauer Plenzler, some confusing information kept appearing. I ran into a number of records that seemed to show she was married to her brother, Frank.  As has been a theme in my family discovery, there is yet another occurrence of duplicate names.

It appears as if both Sophia and her brother Frank each married a Szymanowski. Frank married Sophia Szymanowski. Sophia Plenzler married Stephen Szymanowski. My research led me to believe that Stephen Szymanowski and Sophia Szymanowski Plenzler were siblings.  I located Stephen Szymanowski’s baptismal record from St. Anthony’s parish, dated September 2, 1892. A transcription of this  record is below and it reflects the same parents as Sophia Szymanowski Plenzler’s baptismal certificate (see post regarding Frank Plenzler).

The 1920 census shows Sophia and Stephen living with Mary, Robert, Frank, and Leo (all single) at 1541 Avondale and notes Stephen as a renter, with Robert as head of household. The 1930 census (page 1 and page 2) shows Stephen and Sophia living at 712 Woodstock (my grandparents were living a block away in the 800 block of Woodstock) and the family has three children:

  1. Leonard, b. 1921, d. 1970
  2. Bernice, b. 1924
  3. Stephen Jr., b. 1925, d. 2010

Stephen passed away July 12, 1966 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery. His obituary was published in the Toledo Blade on July 14, 1966. His obituary is transcribed below:

Leo was the last child of Eva Dauer and Joseph Plenzler. He was born March 14, 1899 and baptized in St. Anthony’s Parish on March 19, 1899. Leo’s baptismal record is transcribed below:

Ego infrascriptus baptizavi Leonem
Natum 14 Martii
ex Josepho Plencler et Eva Dauer
Patrini fuerunt Adalbertus Toda, Josepha Majchrzak
F.S. Motulewski

I located Leo on the 1920 census, living with his siblings Robert, Mary, and Frank at the family home at 1451 Avondale. What is particularly interesting about this census is that there is also a family listed at the same address of Sophia and Steve Szymanowski. Where there two Sophia Szymanowskis? Did Sophia Plenzler marry a Szymanowski? Frank married Sophia Szymanowski. Did Sophia Szymanowski have a sibling named Steve? More investigation in the near future! (I do believe this is the case, but have not plowed through the census records yet.)

Leo’s World War I draft registration provided is occupation as a presshand at the Toledo Metal Wheel company (you’ll need to scroll down the page a bit to find the article on Toledo Metal Wheel).  Here is also an interesting blog post about the Toledo Metal Wheel company.

I have no details about Leo’s marriage; however, he married a woman named Harriet. This marriage produced two sons: Leon and Phillip.

Leo passed away April 27, 1963 at the age of 65. His obituary was published in the Toledo Blade April 28, 1963 and is transcribed below.

Leo J. Plenzler, 64, of 520 Detroit Ave., died yesterday in Toledo Hospital of a heart ailment.

A lifelong Toledo resident, Mr. Plenzler was a set-up man 35 years at the DeVilbiss Co.

Surviving are his wife, Harriet; sons, Leo, Jr. and Phillip J., sisters, Mary and Mrs. Sophie Szymanowski, and brothers, Robert and Frank, all of Toledo.

The body is in the Sujkowski Mortuary. Services will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Frank was the seventh child of Joseph Plenzler and Eva Dauer, born February 8, 1895. All records I’ve located stated his birth as 1896, but the St. Anthony’s baptismal register shows that Frank was born in 1895. His baptismal record is transcribed below:

Frank was enlisted into the Army in World War I. A copy of his World War I draft card is here. His draft card notes his employment at Seiss Manufacturing, a manufacturer that produced and sold bicycle parts. As a bit of nostalgia, here is a link to an advertisement for Seiss bicycle horns published in Boys’ Life Magazine, March 1921.

As with his brother, Robert, a record of his World War I service is provided in the Ohio Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, World War 1917-18. The record for Frank in the Ohio Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, World War 1917-1917 is transcribed below:

Sophia’s obituary was published February 22, 1990 in the Toledo Blade and is transcribed below:

Sophia Plenzler, age 92 years, formerly of Campbell St., died on Wednesday, February 21 in the Toledo Hospital. Preceded in death by her husband, Frank and son, Edwin. Survived by sister, Mrs. Clara B. Zion of Tiffin, OH; also nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Friday 12:30 p.m. from the Sujkowski & Son Funeral Home, Airport Hwy. Funeral Mass at St. Hyacinth Church at 1 PM. Scripture services Thursday at 7 PM in the mortuary, where visitation will be Thursday after 5 PM. Burial Calvary.

Mary Plenzler was the seventh child born to Eva Dauer and Joseph Plenzler on September 14, 1892. Mary was baptized in St. Anthony’s Parish, September 18, 1892. Mary’s baptismal name was Marianna Magdalena. Her baptismal record is transcribed below:

#155
Datum

Bapt.: 18 Sept.
Nomen: Marianna Magdalena /binom./
Genus: foem.
Thori: Leg.
Parentes: Plencner Josephus fil. Josephi et Mariannae; Dauer, Eva fil Andreas et Mariannae n Aumiller.
Patrini: Franciscus Zielinski et Magalena Brzoska

As noted with her brother, Robert, it is interesting to note that paternity of the child’s parents is also noted during this period with St. Anthony’s baptismal records. While Eva Dauer’s mother was noted as Marianna Omler on Robert’s baptism record, it is noted as Marianna Aumiller on Mary’s baptism record. It will be interesting to see if there are any more leads with Eva’s family name if it is possible to obtain the marriage records from Poznan for Eva and Joseph.

It seems as if Mary resided with her brother, Robert, her entire adult life and never married. The 1930 census shows Robert and Mary living at 1541 Avondale and this was the address on her death records as well. This is a picture of the property.

Mary passed away January 4, 1969 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery through St. Stanislaus Parish. Her obituary was published January 6, 1969 in the Toledo Blade and is transcribed below:
